Obituary: George A. Gross

“George A. Gross Delanson – George A. Gross 83, Delanson, NY, passed away Tuesday, September 10th at the Albany Medical Center after a brief illness.

George was born April 19, 1941 in Jamaica, NY, a son of Alois and Elizabeth (Walker) Gross. He graduated from Duanesburg High School and later, enlisted in the US Navy serving as a radarman aboard the USS Beale. Upon returning home, George began a long career with Schenectady County Highway Department where he retired as Senior Road Maintenance Supervisor in 1999. He would later support the department seasonally as needed for several years. George also devoted his time to Burtonsville Fire Department where he served as Assistant Chief and Captain since March of 1964. He enjoyed bowling, softball, coaching Little League and playing basketball in his younger days.

He married Diane (Jackson) Gross on September 29, 1962. She predeceased him on May 20, 2006. Survivors include: his son, John A. (Laura) Gross of Esperance, his granddaughter; Shannon Gross, his nieces and nephew; Lisa Glenn, Robin Glenn and Norman Glenn. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, his daughter and son- in-law; Christine (Thom) Provencher and his sister, Ann Glenn of Esperance.

A period of visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 20th at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main Street Schoharie during which time the Burtonsville Fire Department will hold a fireman’s service. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Saratoga National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of George to: the Burtonsville Fire Department, 2053 Burtonsville Rd., Esperance, NY 12066.
