“Duanesburg residents will have a chance to talk about their cable television and internet access during a public hearing Tuesday night at the Duanesburg YMCA in Delanson.
The hearing, which starts at 7 p.m., comes as the town weighs a franchise agreement with Spectrum, the new company formed in 2016 with the merger of Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications. The town previously had a franchise agreement with Time Warner and has been working with neighboring towns in Schoharie County to negotiate a new agreement with Spectrum.
The biggest issue for the town has been trying to get the cable company to extend service to new areas of the rural town, where only about 57 percent of the Duanesburg’s 6,000 residents subscribe to cable and internet service from Spectrum. The company serves about 1,000 households or businesses in Duanesburg and Delanson, according to state Public Service Commission documents.
The previous agreement required Time Warner to provide service on roads with population densities of at least 20 homes per mile. In the hearing notice, Supervisor Roger Tidball said the town has been unsuccessful in convincing Spectrum to extend service to new roads.”
