“If the walls of the 1750s Scottish barn in Duanesburg that houses Back Barn Brewing Co. could talk, imagine the stories they would tell. Scenes of pre-Revolutionary War farmers taking swills of hard cider after pitching loose straw and hay into the barn for winter, Civil War soldiers coming off the nearby D&H Railroad line to greet their families, perhaps toasting with a glass of locally made whiskey, or road crews from the Depression era stopping to quench their thirst while putting the first coats of pavement down on U.S. Route 20, the major east-west byway across New York state, would perhaps be highlights in the story of the barn’s 260-plus years of existence.
Brenda L. Schworm, the owner of Back Barn Brewing Co., thought the structure, which was slowly conceding to the rigors of time on its creaky lumber and tired stonework after years spent vacant, might have a few more stories waiting in the future. After retiring from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel then working for a private defense contractor in northern Virginia, Schworm returned home to Duanesburg, where she grew up on a farm and had family remaining, to turn her interest in craft beer into a company.”
