“The Schuyler town board has approved an amendment to a zoning ordinance that could allow the proposed Watkins Road solar project to move forward.
The amended local law approved last week permits solar farms and solar power plants to be installed in areas zoned for commercial/telecommunications use in Schuyler subject to site plan review by the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals and other requirements within the town’s solar ordinance.
The commercial/telecommunications, or cell tower zone, was created a number of years ago in the area of East Schuyler where the proposed Watkins Road solar project is sited, but there are no cell towers there, said Town Supervisor Anthony Lucenti.
“The next step is a meeting for the zoning board to say yes or no to the entire project,” Lucenti said.
The next meeting date for the Schuyler Zoning Board of Appeals has yet to be announced. The Herkimer town board would also have to approve the plan since the 20-megawatt project, proposed by SunEast Development, is on a 172.3-acre site in both Schuyler and Herkimer.”
