Obituary: Merton Van Wei

March 17, 2024 by l

“Merton “Mert” G. Van Wie Princetown – Merton “Mert” G. Van Wie, 89, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, March 8, 2024.
Born in Schenectady, he was the son of the late Merton F. Van Wie and Ella Wagoner. Merton is recently predeceased by, and has now been reunited with, his beloved wife of 68 years, Katherine I. Van Wie.
Merton went to Duanesburg School. Shortly after, he and his wife created A-1 Water Wagon in Duanesburg out of their own necessity and turned it into a large successful business where they delivered bulk water all over the Northeast for commercial and residential needs. They excelled in customer service and satisfaction until their retirement in 2000.
After his retirement Merton enjoyed going to the Adesa Syracuse car auctions and Oswego Speedway to watch the super modified races. When home, he was always tinkering around and building things in his garage. He was very mechanically inclined. Merton also enjoyed watching NASCAR and wrestling, eating, playing cards, hunting, fishing and playing practical jokes on all those he loved.
Merton was a wonderful and loving son, brother, cousin, husband, uncle, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be remembered most for his incredible sense of humor and quick wit. He will also be remembered for his selfless acts of kindness and support of his family, friends, and neighbors.
Merton previously requested that In lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Community Hospice as he will remain forever grateful for the love and care they provided his beloved wife in her final days.
All are welcome to attend his calling hours on Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205. Relatives are invited to attend a small reception directly afterwards at his home.”
