“The state is putting the brakes on the opening of a $3 million expansion of the Duanesburg sewer system until the town fixes long-standing problems with its treatment plant that has been fouling a tributary of the Hudson River.
Last week, the state Department of Environmental Conservation told the town that its new Sewer District No. 3 — which covers the hamlet at the intersection of routes 7 and 20 in Schenectady County — cannot be hooked up without fixes first being done to reduce unsafe pollution coming from the treatment plant on Cole Road.
DEC first put the town on notice about inadequate sewage treatment in November 2016. That order set a January 2017 deadline for the town to submit engineering reports on how to make both short- and long-term improvements to the plant, as well as measure the impact of the new district on the plant.
The new district includes sewer systems for more than 100 residential and commercial properties spread across more than 200 acres.”
