“William M. Scranton, 83, passed away at home on November 10, 2010, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born in Altamont, NY, he was the son of the late Roy and Gertrude Gaige Scranton. He was educated in the Delanson schools. Bill served in the United States Army during WWII. He married his beloved wife, Irene Lewis, on January 13, 1945. Mrs. Scranton passed away on July 23, 1992. For many years until it closed, Bill was employed at the Army Depot in Rotterdam, then later as a bus driver and custodian with the Duanesburg school system, retiring in 1989. Bill was a lifelong active member of the Quaker Street Fire Dept. He served as a fire commissioner for the dept. and was a member of the Noah Mason Lodge # 754. Bill was involved with the Duanesburg Area Little League and was the bus driver for the Duanesburg Senior Meal Site. He is survived by his four children, Charyl (Ed) Deedy of Pennsylvania, Corky (Lona) Scranton of Delanson, Steve (Marian) Scranton of South Carolina and Karen (Gene) Brownell of Delanson; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Edna Taber of Duanesburg; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Irene, Bill was predeceased by his grandson, Paul Scranton, in 1991; his great-grandchildren, Dylan and Loretta; and his two sisters, Laura Panas and Jane Tassel; and his brother, Edgar Scranton. Family and friends are invited to call at the White VanBuren Funeral Home, Inc., 1779 Main Street, Delanson, NY 12053 on Sunday, November 14, 2010 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Esperance-Sloansville United Methodist Church, Esperance on Monday, November 15 , 2010 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Esperance Cemetery Burtonsville Road, Esperance, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill’s memory to The Esperance-Sloansville United Methodist Church or to the Noah Lodge # 754.”
