“State Police on Tuesday tentatively identified the victim of a Delanson garage fire as Daniel P. Bartlett.
The 50-year-old village resident is believed to be the person who was found in a truck inside a garage that was destroyed by an explosion and fire Saturday, State Police in Princetown said.
The fire occurred at Bartlett’s residence at on Thousand Acres Road. Officials said final identification of the body awaits DNA verification, which could take weeks.
“Bartlett is unaccounted for, and it is reasonable at this point to believe that he is the deceased who was found in a vehicle registered to him on his property,” State Police said in a prepared statement. The cause of death is pending toxicology and tissue samples.
The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is investigating what caused the fire, but foul play is not suspected, police officials said.
John Nuzback, the county fire coordinator, said officials were looking into the possibility that the fire may have been ignited by mechanical problems from an older model Ford truck or a propane grill that were in the garage. He said they would pore over documents about recalls of Fords. But he noted that the fire caused so much damage that they may never be able to pinpoint the exact cause.
