“Frederick W. Dykeman Sr., 90, of Delanson, at rest Thursday, December 15, 2005, with his family present during his final hours, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center.
Born in the Bronx, April 20, 1915, the son of Fred S. and Bertha L. Dykeman, Fred and family later moved to Schenectady, where he graduated from Mont Pleasant High School (1933). He also earned a degree from Troy Technical College. In his youth he drove a horse drawn delivery wagon for the Freihofer Baking Company and Bellevue Dairy. He was later employed as a draftsman with General Electric, retiring in 1975 with over 37 years ofservice. He was a founding member of the Quaker Street Fire Company (1941) and was one of the planners of the new firehouse built in 1949. He was an active member of the Quaker Street Cattle 4H Club; he also served on the Zoning and Planning Boards of the Town of Duanesburg; and was a former staff member of the Altamont Fair. He was a member of General Electric’s Quarter Century Club, Garway Club and Piper’s Group for Turbine Drafting. He was an avid Yankee fan, traveling to Yankee Stadium many times.
He was the beloved husband of 56 years to the late Margaret Beretz Dykeman (1993). Beloved father of Frederick W. (Jean) Dykeman Jr. of Delanson, John F. (Carol) Dykeman of Burton, SC, David A. (Gail) Dykeman, Julia (Vincent) DeBraccio, Terry J. (Colleen) Dykeman; all of Delanson. Fred was the loving grandfather of 26 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 1 to 3 pm at WhiteVan Buren Funeral Home, 1779 Main Street, Delanson. A funeral service will be held Monday 10 a.m. at the Delanson United Methodist Church. Burial in the spring will take place in Grove Cemetery, Delanson.
