“Ronald Stevens was an undersheriff at the time Schoharie County was hit with a one-two punch from tropical storms Irene and Lee in 2011.
For first responders, Stevens recalled, it was a wake-up call.
“When we had outside communities come in, pledge their support and help us with the flood, that’s when we realized how dissimilar our radio systems were,” said Stevens, who now serves as sheriff.
Since then, the county’s communications infrastructure has been a work in progress. As of Tuesday, the sheriff’s office has secured $3 million to closely align its radio network with channels in the core Capital Region. Stevens’ plan is for Schoharie County to become more connected to Schenectady County’s radio system, and therefore be connected to Albany County’s robust system.”
