“Patricia Payne, who with her late husband, Robert L. Payne, founded and ran the legendary The Bears’ Steakhouse in Duanesburg starting in 1969, died Sunday, according to her family. It was seven years and one month, to the day, after the death of her husband, on May 14, 2013.
Payne was 83 and died suddenly of natural causes at the Schenectady home of her son John, according to her elder son, Robert L. Payne II. Payne and John spent last week in her beloved Ogunquit, Maine, where she was a devotee of lobster rolls for dinner, followed by banana splits, of which her palate was even more discerning. Pity the ice cream shop that skimped on toppings or sullied a sundae with artificial whipped cream, a detestable product that she derided as “fake dairy crap.””
