Ncondezi Energy: Supplying affordable energy to southern Africa

March 4, 2020 by l

“Ncondezi Energy is seeking to supply much needed power to southern Africa through the development of a 300MW thermal coal power plant and mine project located in the Tete Province, Northern Mozambique. Not only that but Ncondezi last year moved into the battery storage space via a Joint Venture with GridX Africa Power Development. The two parties have agreed to finance the development of a 400 kWp fully off grid, ground mounted solar PV facility plus 228 kW/912 energy storage facility for a commercial customer in Mozambique.

In the film below, CEO Hanno Pengilly outlines Ncondezi’s strategy for the business:

The Government of Mozambique is committed to addressing the well publicised power shortages in the region and has stated its aim of accelerating the electrification of the country and expanding access to electricity. Mozambique is the largest exporter of power to South Africa and yet only 35% of the country is currently electrified. Ncondezi’s flagship 300MW Project will help Mozambique maximise the potential of its resources creating direct and indirect jobs, in-country beneficiation, contributing to the economic development of the country’s industrial and consumer bases and most importantly advancing social upliftment.

The power plant will be designed to be equipped with state-of-the-art emissions controls technologies that will reduce local air pollutants, minimizing the plant’s impact on the environment and ensuring its compliance with the most stringent emission standards.”
