“Developers of what would be a 700-acre, $135 million solar farm here made their case before residents of this Montgomery County community on Wednesday, although the final “yes” or “no” decision is ultimately up to a special panel made up largely of state agency heads.
That’s because the 90.5 megawatt Mohawk Solar project falls under the state’s Article 10 laws, which govern new power plant proposals above 25 megawatts.
Proponents, though, stressed that they need community cooperation, since local opinions are considered to be part of the approval process. “We’re here for public outreach,” Scott McDonald, the project manager, told the approximately 75 people who came to the Canajoharie library to learn about the plan.
At 90.5 MW, enough for some 28,000 homes, the project proposed by the Portland, Ore.-based Avangrid Renewables, isn’t the state’s biggest proposal in terms of electricity production. But the 700-acre footprint is substantial.”
