“The New York Landmarks Conservancy said last week that 22 Sacred Sites Grants totaling $316,000 were awarded to historic religious properties throughout the state, including $7,000 to Christ Episcopal Church in Duanesburg and $6,000 to Christ Church United Methodist in Troy.
The Sacred Sites Program provides congregations with matching grants for planning and implementing exterior restoration projects, technical assistance and workshops, according to the conservancy. Since 1986, the program has pledged more than 1,493 grants totaling more than $11.1 million to almost 805 religious institutions statewide.
“We are very pleased to be able to assist another diverse group of religious institutions,” Peg Breen, conservancy president, said in a statement announcing the funds. “Aside from architectural merit, each one is an important community anchor.”
Money for the Duanesburg church will help fund a conditions survey. It was built from 1791 to 1793 by James Duane, village founder, attorney, New York City mayor from 1784 to 1789, and a judge to U.S. District Court.”
