“County officials aren’t concerned about the status of their energy supply contract with Monolith Solar, despite financial struggles at the company that have led to worker furloughs.
Monolith has an exclusive long-term contract to install solar panels on county facilities and supply electric power to the county at a discounted cost, and County Attorney Chris Gardner said he doesn’t expect Monolith’s financial troubles to affect the contract.
“I don’t think it will have any impact on the county because we’re not a debtor,” Gardner said. “They don’t owe us any money.”
he Monolith contract has been a cornerstone of the county’s efforts to make county government fossil-fuel independent by 2020. County officials say they are well on their way to meeting that goal.
Monolith in 2014 signed a 20-year contract with the county to develop up to 5 megawatts of solar power, with the power to be sold to the county at a roughly 30 percent discount from retail electric rates. Since then, Monolith has installed solar panels on some county buildings and has developed four large solar arrays on county-owned or -controlled lands in Niskayuna, Glenville and Rotterdam. Monolith has installed the arrays at no cost to the county.”
