“A ‘SOLAR farm’ featuring thousands of panels gathering enough energy to meet the needs of almost 1,000 homes could be installed at a quarry near Lutterworth.
Low Carbon Solar, a firm which specialises in building the so-called solar farms, is hosting a public consultation event at the Coventry Road recreation ground pavilion tomorrow (Friday), between 3 and 6.30pm.
The Gloucestershire-based firm is thinking of using the Cemex Quarry site, also known as Slip Inn, about two miles to the north of Lutterworth, as a base for the solar arrays.
Giovanni Maruca, from Low Carbon Solar, said the firm had been working with Cemex for some time to identify quarries which would be suitable for solar farms.
He added: “There are a number of factors we look at in our feasibility studies, such as the proximity to residents and whether they can be connected to the national grid or not.
“We haven’t ironed out all the details yet as there are some things which may come out of the public consultation.”
The solar farm would be made up of rows of thousands of solar panels tilted to face the sun.
Mr Maruca said Low Carbon Solar does not have a similar facility in the midlands, although other renewable energy firms may do.
He added: “If all goes well we would be looking to submit a planning application in the next month or so.
“The sites are normally screened from view with high hedges and fences, and this deters vandalism as well.”
Low Carbon Solar say they aim to generate power to meet the needs of 912 homes.”
