5 more lawyers lose credits – Pension scrutiny costs attorney who retired after working for Duanesburg district for 25 years, comptroller says

July 23, 2008 by l

“Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli stripped state pension credits Tuesday from five more lawyers working for upstate school districts.

The action came as part of a review of hundreds of attorneys who may have improperly earned the taxpayer-funded benefits.

Paul Callahan, who worked for the Duanesburg school district for 25 years until he retired in March, was among those who lost pension credits.

Callahan is the latest Capital Region lawyer to lose pension credits. Comptroller’s records show at least seven lawyers from the Capital Region have lost credits, more than any other area in the state. DiNapoli has also pulled credits from five lawyers in Nassau County. Statewide, there have been 22 full or partial removals of pension benefits.

Duanesburg officials incorrectly reported Callahan as a part-time employee, giving him four years worth of pension credits, DiNapoli said. The district also failed to keep time sheets, provide Callahan with a permanent work space or conduct performance reviews.
