“Fire leveled a garage and upstairs apartment in a small neighborhood off Route 7 Monday evening.
More than two dozen firefighters from four area companies were called to battle the blaze, which tore through the structure adjacent to the DiCaprio residence on Acorn Road. Duanesburg Fire Chief Ken Griffin said there were no injuries resulting from the fire, which is still under investigation.
“The cause is still to be determined,” he said from the scene, as firefighters continued to douse the smoldering wreckage.
Griffin said residents of apartment were outside when they noticed smoke coming from the structure. He said crews from the Quaker Street Fire Department who were first on the scene at about 6:25 p.m. found the building fully engulfed.
The structure was owned by the DiCaprio family and occupied by their son and his family, Griffin said. Members of the family declined to comment from the scene.
Though the structure was leveled by the fire, crews prevented flames from spreading to the adjacent home. The home did appear to sustain some heat damage from the fire.
Fire companies from Delanson and Esperance also battled the fire. Fire police shut down a segment of Route 7 west of the Routes 20 and 7 intersection for nearly two hours during the incident.”
